Welcome!
My name is Wayne Godfrey. I started The Unconstrained Discourse a few years ago as a mechanism to satisfy my creative urge and communicate some of the things that kept bouncing around in my head. There have been several stops and starts in the process while I tried to figure out how (or if) I really wanted to do this. I also went through a few transitions in my professional career that caused me to delay work on The Discourse.
The Unconstrained Discourse was up for a long time without an About Me page but various people kept telling me that I really needed to write something about myself. Quite frankly, my opinion is that if you really want to know who Wayne Godfrey is, you should read the articles -- that's who I am. I finally capitulated though and here is the result.
I was born, raised, and educated in the Western part of South Carolina -- what we fondly refer to as The Upstate. The Upstate is the most conservative portion of the state which may explain why I am the way I am. I graduated from Woodruff High School and then received a BS in Computer Engineering from Clemson University.
After graduating from Clemson, I moved to the most liberal portion of the state -- the Charleston area -- to take a job as an electronics engineer with the Naval Electronic Systems Engineering Center. I was there for 10 years working as a project engineer/manager in first the Metrology Engineering Division and then the Meteorology Engineering Division (that's test equipment calibration and weather systems respectively).
While down there, I married (a Woodruff girl that I knew from church) and had two wonderful children. The family then packed up and moved back closer to The Upstate when I went to work for KEMET Electronics in Greenwood. That was my first foray into IT management as the Information Resources Supervisor.
I had been at KEMET 7 years when we packed the family up again and moved to the Spartanburg area where I took a position as the Director of Information Systems for a national finance company. While there, I finished up the MBA from The University of Phoenix that I had started at KEMET. Ultimately though, this gig turned out not to be a very good fit -- for them or me, and after two years I left and went to work for a local computer reseller and consulting firm. I spent the next 7 years doing software development with a little customer support thrown in.
That company closed the doors in April of 2007 and I landed at my current position. I'm the software development manager for a real estate development and resort management company in The Upstate. My group is responsible for software development and support of major line-of-business applications for the corporation.
On a personal note: I'm married (22 years as of this writing); have a 20 year old son; a 16 year old daughter; a dog and a cat. I'm a conservative Christian (think far right and then go even farther to the right). I own guns -- and carry them. I like NASCAR and professional football but I think professional wrestling is stupid. I love to read. I enjoy going camping with the family. I like to cook out and have been seen standing over the grill in bright sunlight, moonlight, thunderstorms, and snow storms.
Well that's who I am -- at least right now. I may be someone different tomorrow; but I doubt it. If there's something else you want to know about me you can ask; but I reserve the right to tell you that it's none of your business (and I probably will).
