Mixed. Unexpected. Disappointing. Scary.
Those are all adjectives that I might use to describe the response that I’ve received so far to the first installment of The Unconstrained Discourse. I’ll list why I would use those four adjectives.
MIXED – The response fell into four categories
-
Absolutely no response
-
No response other than “I want to subscribe”
-
A few polite comments of little substance
-
Spirited discussion of the article and issues surrounding it
UNEXPECTED
-
I didn’t really expect any of my carefully hand-picked audience to not respond at all.
-
I didn’t expect anyone to ask to be subscribed but not make any comment at all – even if it was a polite comment of little substance.
-
I expected someone to respond with some version of “I don’t want to see any more of these”.
DISAPPOINTING
I had hoped to generate more of the spirited discussion. The fact that I didn’t was NOT unexpected – I didn’t really expect much substantive feedback – but it was nevertheless disappointing.
SCARY
With all of that said you may be wondering if I’m going to continue doing this. Yes I am. There are several reasons that I’m going to continue.
The primary reasons for continuing this exercise in futility are I want to and I can. Those alone are enough. (Actually, I’m hoping someone will stumble across this and decide to pay me something for doing it.)
I also am still hoping that I’ll eventually find some topic that will stimulate someone to begin thinking beyond the bounds of the trash that we are fed on a daily basis by most of the media. If just one person reads something here that helps to pull (or push) them from the depths of ignorance or apathy – it will have been worth it. If just one person reads something here and is offended – it will have been worth it. If just one person reads something here and is uplifted – it will have been worth it.
